20's Plenty for York

Objectives

Some residential areas now have a 20mph limit without humps including Grange St and it is agreed for South Bank and Hollybank Road (Holgate)

Our aim is for Total 20 - a default residential road speed of 20 mph where people live without traffic calming in York and surrounding villages.

“Total 20” is the policy of setting 20mph as the default speed limit for ALL roads in a community or local authority. Exceptions can be made to this as it is a “default” only. Local Authority traffic engineers will determine any exceptions based upon the local use and characteristics of a road and in any case under DfT guidance need to take full account of the need of vulnerable road users. Hence arterial and main roads are normally not set at 20mph unless there are special considerations such as high VRU use or poor VRU facilities.
